Welcome
My name is Anna Aalten. I am an anthropologist and yoga teacher.
Until 2019 I was an Associate Professor in Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, where my work consisted of teaching and doing research. My special interests are the sociology and anthropology of the body, gender and gender relations, food, dance, and qualitative research methods, biographical research in particular. These interests are reflected in my publications.
From 2004-2008 I also held the post of Professor of Excellence and Well-being in the Performing Arts at Codarts, University of Professional Arts Education in Rotterdam. At Codarts I set up a research group to stimulate and research the health and well-being of dancers.
The moving body is a central element in my life. Since I started my first ballet lesson, at the age of four, I have never stopped moving. First it was ballet, then gymnastics, modern dance, aerobics, African dance, Tai Chi, Bharat Natyam, stretching, Pilates, Argentinian tango and different types of yoga. I love to dance and I love to walk.
I have studied different styles and with different teachers, both in The Netherlands and abroad. I became a teacher in Power Yoga at the Dasra Center of Tonnie Goes. My teacher's certificate in Hatha Yoga was obtained at the American Yandara Yoga Institute and I trained to become a Yin Yang Yoga teacher with Simon Low of the British Yoga Academy. I also studied Yoga as Therapy with Ashley Ludman, Restorative Yoga with Judith Lasater, Yoga Nidra with Uma and Nirlipta Dinsmore-Tuli, Yin Yoga & Storytelling with Biff Mithoefer and the Qigong for Yoga Teachers Immersion Training and Mindfulness Immersion Training with Mimi Kuo-Deemer. The Yin Yoga & Anatomy, Chakra Theory & Meditation, and Yoga Philosophy trainings with Paul and Suzee Grilley are a major influence in the development of my own practice and my teaching. I am a certified E-RYT 500 yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.
I teach Yin Yang Yoga and Yin Yoga classes and offer a variety of workshops and retreats.
